I enjoy the fact that most of the Yelping I see in the DC area is of a positive tone but I've noticed that we're being way to nice with some of the ratings. I admit I can hand out a 4 star rating with ease and have only done a single one star rating. Maybe it's because we're all yelping about the places we love.
Doesn't anyone have some spots that they love to hate? I've got a couple. One I wrote about the others I'm trying to get my raging thoughts under control.
I'm looking to create a list of places to avoid like the plague on my profile anyone else up for a little beltway cynicism?

I'm up for it. If I could get my wife to become a member, I'm sure 90% of her reviews will end up criticizing DC restaurants as she loves to compare them to SF restaurants. SF tends to have higher quality service and better food. In the DC area it seems you get ignored a lot for being young (in your 20s) but you don't have the same discrimination in SF. Also, if you're a long time customer you tend to get free food at the privately own restaurants there.

Aaron, that's too bad that you can't get into the Cheesecake Factory. I haven't been to one in the DC area but the location in San Francisco's downtown Macy is loooooooooong. The food was okay but I don't think it was worth the wait. I waited about 45 min before I was finally seated.

I tried to get into a Cheesecake factory in downtown Chicago too. Another failure. 3 hours wait times seem to be their magic number. I opted for take-out cheesecake instead. That still took somewhere between 30 mins and an hour to deliver 1 slice of take-out. This stuff is prepared, sitting behind the counter. Wow.
A Russian teacher once told me that in Russia, long lines form for no reason. You walk down the street in Moscow you see a line, then you jump in line too. Often the people didn't even know what awaited at the end of the line. It might have been daily staples like bread or milk. However, it might be nothing you are concerned with. There is some sort of primal draw to the long line. The line is long that beginning is lost in translation, so that no one knows what awaits at the other end of the line. It didn't matter, everyone wanted to be in line. If the line was this long, what ever was at the other end must be worth waiting for.
When I finally tasted my cheesecake, all I could think about was this story. Russians, lines, and an $8 slice of mediocre cheesecake. Maybe I should just be happy it wasn't milk and bread.

I would not worry about the number of high ratings. People enjoy rating their favorite places first. As more ratings come in and as people run out of favorites the dirty laundry will be revealed.

I'm from Chicago originally, and frankly most of the places my fiancee and I go to don't match up to the quality I'm used to back home. I've lived here for more then 2 years and still have to go home to get my yearly fix of stuft pizza, real mexican food, and (though I hate to admit it ) vienna beef hotdogs.
I'm sorry that you had less then adequate cheesecake, especially in Chicago. If you have the oppurtunity to have cheescake in Chicago again might I suggest Eli's Cheese Cake world located in Chicago northwest side. There is a cafe attached to the Eli's factory. They have a varied collection of cheese cakes. Eli's is a Chicago original, and is hands down better then the Cheese Cake factory. That's just my opinion though ;)

I agree that Chicago has some darn good food and I have tried Eli's cheesecake. It was top notch. I was able to eat cheesecake the last day Eli's The Place for Steaks was in business. Hal the pianist played his last tune, then one of the last classic steak places was closed forever.

Rappahannock does suffer from poor service behind the counter from time to time. It's coffee is still by far some of the best around. But I do know the feeling of wanting to jump the counter to grab my java especially when I need it so badly in the morning.
