(Oleana - thanks Jeremy!), I'm looking for another rec for tonight...preferably somewhere yummy, lively and relatively inexpensive....any ideas?

I would go to Sonsie which is 327 Newbury Street. Phone number is :617) 351-2500. It's always packed, even in the middle of the night. America food...really really good chicken salads, meats, wines....the front doors all open up so you can see the crowd walking by on the street. Have fun!

Oleana is really the best choice (I just ran into Harvard's Larry Summers there a few days ago). There aren't many great restaurants in Boston... I just heard from a friend about Ten Tables in Jamaica Plain, with really high praise. JP is a real artsy/quircky area of Boston, worth checking out but is a bit off the beaten track. Mantra (617-542-8111) serves good Indian-French food before it turns into a club at 11:30 (try to get the private service in the spiral structure - you'll see what I mean). It is hosted in a former bank building but is modern, has beautiful people and a former vault for private parties. "I am Hungry" on Charles Street is a treat, but it's quite tiny. Report back on Yelp about where you ended up and how it was! :)

Depending on what  you are in the mood for, I'd suggest Brown Sugar Cafe (for Thai food), Croma (yummy, inexpensive pizzas on Newbury St.), or Sunset Cantina (for a lively bar/grill offering tasty Tex Mex food). All three places offer dinner entres for under $15.

If you're feeling adventurous, Craigie Street Bistrot just outside Harvard Sq has a Chef's Whim menu starting at 9 tonight, where you get 4 small plates according to, you got it, the chef's whim. At a set price, this is a great way to sample delicious french food.  If you'd rather have some options, try the Blue Room in Kendall; it's got funky art, amazing drinks, a fun crowd, and food that will blow you away.

I think Boston has some great restaurants but it really depends on your  mood and price range.  If you like Oleana, you might like my personal favorties:  Helmand (Afghani cuisine) or Tangierino (Morroccan).  I agree that Tapeo is great as well as Dali's. Also, Louie's (Louis Vuitton- Pan-asian) and Pigalle (french), and Oishi (sushi) is supposedly very good.
