I need to increase my mobility and don't want to buy a second car.
I'd prefer to buy a used bike, but a good one, and I don't know enough about bikes to find what I want and not get ripped off on craigslist.

Have you checked out the Yellow Bike Project? There's one off 51st street, East-bound, and it's in a large warehouse. A yellow bike marks the entrance. Basically they'll help you build your own bike or you can pay about $30 to $70 for your own bike.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but may help -
Austin cycling association - great bunch of people that know bikes and fun rides - also some used bikes advertised for sale by memebers listed on their page http://www.austincycli...
Also: If you really get into it, bicycletexas.com lists rides around the state for the year. Every ride I have gone to has neen a blast, with great people and fun times for one and all. Everything from beginner to pro - listed - give it a shot - it's a total blast.

Freewheeling Bicycles at the corner of San Gabriel and 24th St.  Nice staff that can probably point you in the right direction if they don't have what you are looking for.

Since Austin is incredibly bike friendly, you can find bikes in ANY pawn shop! If you don't know too much about bikes, though, grab a friend who does because you don't want to get ripped off.
What sort of bike are you looking for? A cruiser, a road bike or a mountain bike? It depends on where you are going and how far you are going and believe me, it makes a WORLD of a difference....

I had good luck with University Cyclery on North Lamar & 29th. They have great bikes if you want to get a dependable one, but don't necessarily want to spend $500. Selection isn't great, though. But what has been said already is right - Austin is very bike friendly. You shouldn't have a problem getting a good bike and a good deal.

You may want to speak with Lee at East Side Pedal Pushers (on 6th, just east of I-35).  He knows quite a bit about being on a budget and acquiring used/reconditioned bikes.
